Black Trans Advocacy Award Nomination

The National Black Trans Advocacy Coalition is proud to formally acknowledge and celebrate the transgender community and activist for black trans equality. This honorable award acknowledgement is in recognition of individuals, groups and organizations who are focused on transformative leadership, the advancement of the black trans movement and global social change.

These awards are intended to highlight outstanding
achievements in four categories:

Nominations will be evaluated by a panel of judges. Judges will review narrative descriptions of each nominee’s accomplishments and select winners in each category. Final award winners will be announced at gala event.

Please feel free to provide photographs, copies of media coverage, and other supportive evidence of the impact made by the nominated individual &/or agency.

All accepted award nominees will receive a certificate of recognition. Category winners will receive a trophy. The award recipient(s) of each category will be announced and honored during the 10th Annual Black Trans Advocacy Coalition Awards Gala, held at the Doubletree Galleria Hotel in Dallas, Texas Friday, April 28, 2023.

Award Category & Descriptions

Foundation Awards

  • Jonathan Thunderword Humanitarian Award: recognizes the work of persons who are devoted to the welfare of humanity. Community work may be demonstrated through Perfecting the nature of mankind, Aiding those less fortunate and Eliminating the suffering and pain of others and whose accomplishments are consistent with Advancing the mission of the Black Trans Advocacy Coalition Kortney Ryan Ziegler – Awareness Award: recognizes the work of persons who are devoted to the affirmation of the African American & Trans identity and to the resolution of race and gender oppression as the source for social change. Community work will be recognized for their advocacy in promoting trans awareness through public visibility in community forums, education environments, film, music, television or other media, and whose accomplishments are consistent with Advancing the mission of the Black Trans Advocacy Coalition
  • Monica Roberts Advocacy Award – recognizes individuals who been an influential role model advocating for services and the rights for transgender people. community work may be demonstrated through their campaigns for issues that promote the inclusion and well-being of the Transgender community and/or has developed innovative programs within their field and whose accomplishments are consistent with Advancing the mission of the Black Trans Advocacy Coalition
  • Louis Mitchell Empowerment Award – recognizes individuals who have dedicated themselves to improving the lives of transgender people. Community work may be demonstrated through their commitment to provide opportunities to people from all segments of our community, aids in the enhancement and development of confidence and knowledge, increasing one’s positive self-image in their own capacity, and whose accomplishments are consistent with Advancing the mission of the Black Trans Advocacy Coalition
  • Kylar Broadus Equality Award – recognizes individuals who have dedicated themselves to advancing human rights for transgender people. Community work may be demonstrated through their commitment to elevate the status of transgender peopole, improve community policies giving every individual a chance to achieve their potential, free from prejudice and discrimination, and whose accomplishments are consistent with Advancing the mission of the Black Trans Advocacy Coalition

Advocate of the Year Awards

  • BTMI Man of The Year – recognizes the man who go above and beyond in advocating for the transmasculine community. Community work may be demonstrated through their commitment to transmale identity developement and holistic wellness, a proven history of volunteer efforts and whose accomplishments are consistent with Advancing the mission of Black Transmen Inc.
  • BTWI Woman of The Year – recognizes the woman who go above and beyond in advocating for the transfeminine community. Community work may be demonstrated through their commitment to transmale identity development and holistic wellness, a proven history of volunteer efforts and whose accomplishments are consistent with Advancing the mission of Black Transwomen Inc.
  • BTMX Advocate of The Year – recognizes the individual who go above and beyond in advocating for the GNC/Non-binary community. Community work may be demonstrated through their commitment to GNC/Non-binary identity development and holistic wellness, a proven history of volunteer efforts and whose accomplishments are consistent with Advancing the mission of Black Trans MX.

Advocate Awards

  • BTAC Jr – recognizes a transgender high school that participates in campaigns to eradicate racism, sexism, transphobia, bullying in school, drugs/alcohol abuse and to raise awareness about gender identity.
  • GOLDEN FLAMES – recognition elders in the movement of a spouse of a Black Trans person that shows unyielding support of the Black Trans Advocacy Coalition through community involvement, participation and leadership
  • EMERGING LEADER – recognition of transgender individuals new to advocacy who has made a significant contribution toward changes and improvements in Health Care, Housing or Employment conditions and access for transgender people
  • TRAILBLAZER – recognition of transgender individuals that are creating new and different ways to advance social change and improvements in Health Care, Housing or Employment conditions and access for transgender people

Ally Awards

  • TRANS ALLY – recognizes individuals that have exemplified unwavering support to the (Black) trans* community by dispelling stereotypes, myths, and prejudices by creating bridges of understanding through education.
  • ORGANIZATION/AGENCY – recognizes an agency/organization or program that has made significant changes and improvements in Health Care, Housing or Employment conditions and access for transgender people.
  • ANCHOR – recognition of a spouse of a Black Trans person that shows unyielding support of the Black Trans Advocacy Coalition through community involvement, participation and leadership.
  • FAITH BASED – This award recognizes Faith Based and Religious Organizations that are inclusive of the transgender community, displays a love and understanding of their faith and affirm ALL people that seek knowledge.
