Black Trans Public Health & Safety Announcement
Community Message regarding the Coronavirus
March 13, 2020
Dear Black Trans Advocacy Coalition Family,
Your health and well-being is our top priority, and our thoughts are with those impacted by the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). With the effects of the outbreak being felt more each day, we wanted to connect with you to help make sure that you are informed about the outbreak as it relates to our community.
COVID-19 continues to spread in the United States and around the world and is now being identified as a pandemic by the World Health Organization. Everyone should be vigilant. Older people, those with other health conditions and people with compromised immune systems have a higher likelihood of severe illness. This includes people living with HIV, especially those with low CD4 counts.
BTAC is following the guidance and expertise of national and local health officials to help protect our members, clients, staff, volunteers and partners from all communicable diseases.
In line with the CDC‘s recommendations, we encourage everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses, including:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Stay home when you are sick.
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
“We would recommend that there not be large crowds,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, director for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told congressional lawmakers on March 11. ”

We foster a spirit of love and we share lots of hugs in this space that we want to preserve. With staying in line with the core intent of the conference and our responsibility to maintain the health and safety of each attendee, we must cancel the conference event.
